World Models: The Next Frontier After Large Language Models
What's Happening: Whilst everyone's been focused on chatbots, a new category of AI is emerging that could transform everything from robotics to video games—and create entirely new opportunities for creators.
The Technical Shift: Current LLMs predict the next word. World models predict what happens next in physical space. They learn by watching videos and using simulation data, then build their own representations of how objects move and interact over time. Think of them as AI that understands physics rather than just language.
Why This Matters Now:
Yann LeCun (one of AI's "godfathers") left Meta to launch his own world model startup, reportedly seeking a $5 billion valuation
Google DeepMind launched its latest world model in August, building real-time interactive environments
Fei-Fei Li's World Labs released Marble, their first commercial world model
General Intuition scored $134 million in seed funding in October to teach agents spatial reasoning
Runway released GWM-1, their first world model, in December
The Market Opportunity: PitchBook predicts the world model market in gaming alone could grow from $1.2 billion (2022-2025) to $276 billion by 2030.
Creator Implications:
Video game content: World models will generate interactive environments on the fly. Creators who understand this technology will produce game content at unprecedented speed.
Training and simulation: Corporate training, medical education, and safety simulations will increasingly use AI-generated scenarios. Subject matter experts who can configure these systems will be in demand.
Video production: World models that understand physics will make video generation more realistic. The current "AI slop" problem (obviously fake, physics-defying content) will diminish—raising the bar for all video creators.
The Opportunity for Niche Creators: These models require domain expertise to configure properly. A world model for architectural visualisation needs different training than one for surgical simulation. The creators who can bridge AI capability and domain knowledge will command premium rates.
